Ratings Review: 2016 World Series (Cubs vs Indians)
The 2016 World Series was a roaring success for FOX. It had the best matchup possible, with the Cleveland Indians and the Chicago Cubs. Between the two teams, you have nearly 180 years of title drought. It has been since 1908 for the Cubs and 1948 for the Indians.
The ratings started strong, as game one was the highest rated start of the series(19.4 million viewers) since the 2009 series between the Yankees and the Phillies. Ratings contiued to be solid, especially the Friday night and Saturday night games when most viewers are away from their TVs.
Game Five, played on a Sunday Night, grew to 23.6 million viewers, the most for any World Series game since Game 7 of the 2011 series and the best Game five numbers since the 1997 series, featuring the Marlins and the Indians. Tha same was true for game six, as it collected 23.4 million viewers, on Tuesday night.
You knew Game seven would be epic the two longest title droughts in the MLB, facing off for a winner take all prize. The game started off with the Cubs dominateing, building a four run lead, but Cleveland battled back and tied the game in the bottom of the 8th, with a two run Home Run blast, off the Cubs ace closer. After nine innings the game was still tied and the rain began. After a short rain delay, The cubs jumped on the board with two runs, leading 8-6, with the indians batting in the bottom of the 10th. However, the game end there, with Cleveland scoring just one run and the Chciago Cubs win their first title in 108 years.
The ratings reflect america's interest in the game and the storylines. 40.1 million people watched game seven, the most in 25 years. The series ended with an average audeince size of 22.85 million viewers and a 6.5 rating in Adults 18-49. It ranks seventh overall of World Series since 1995 (after the players strike that cancelled the '94 World Series).
