A Look Back at My 2017 Predictions

It was a bad year for predictions, as I only had two of ten correct and a third as a push for 2017. I think I let outside buzz and the media influence my vision of the future way too much.  A lot of these could still happen, they just didn't happen over the last 365 days. So, here is a recap of my predictions.

1) CBS will combine with another media company: (WRONG)
CBS is still on its own, but there were two other buy outs / mergers in the media. AT&T going after TimeWarner and the recent announcement of Disney buying most of the 21st Century Fox assets are now in the hands of the federal regulatory steps and both are not totally assured.

2) ESPN will separated from Disney: (WRONG)
ESPN is shedding subscribers at an alarming rate, going from 100 million to 88 million in just a couple of years. That is a lost of near $100 million per month for Disney, yet it still has all those huge rights fees to pay for. Disney is not interested in dropping ESPN and with the purchase of the regional sports networks from FOX, it is doubling down on sports and the new ESPN streaming service, launching in 2018.

3) One cable network group goes OTT on its own: (WRONG)
Networks are working on their OTT streaming services to compliment their cable networks, not replace them.

4) No more Thursday Night Football on CBS or NBC: (WRONG)
Ratings are down, again, but The NFL is commited to the night and the rights fees they are getting from the two networks.

5) Thomas Gibson returns to CRIMINAL MINDS: (WRONG)
The storyline tempted us, but the once lead actor of the series did not come back to the series.

6) Facebook will stream its first TV series: (CORRECT)
The social network has a few reality TV series, including BALL IN THE FAMILY, RETURNING THE FAVOR and LOOSLEY EXACTLY NICOLE.

7) TWITCH adoption by a major network: (PUSH)
ESPN & TBS do air programs dedicated to E-Sports, but there is not a night or programming black devoted to the genre. Not wrong, but not complete right either.

8) STAR TREK: DISCOVERY will be a hit for CBS All-Access: (CORRECT)
CBS is not releasing any metrics on the streaming service or the new series. The week following the series premiere, CBS All Access did have its largest day of new subscribers (including myself). The series has also received critical acclaim and has been given a second season renewal.

9) A New QUANTUM LEAP TV Series: (WRONG)
There has been a lot of rumpling on a new QUANTUM LEAP project (film or series), but nothing solid or the start of the production process.

10) CBS series continues on CBA All-Access: (WRONG)
So far, the news shows for CBS All Access have been exclusively new series.

Look for my 2018 predictions, coming out soon.
