Looking Back at My 2013 Predictions

It has been a full year since my 2013 TV predictions so as my last blog entry for 2013, I thought it would be fun to look back at those predictions and see how bad or good I did. I had 17 different predictions for the year, so let's get right into it.

What I Got 100 Percent Right:

That the DANCING WITH THE STARS ratings slide would continue in the fall of 2013.
The series continued to struggle in the A18-49 ratings and was scaled down to just one night a week.

SCANDAL would top ELEMENTARY in the ratings and get a full 3rd season order.
In December of 2012, SCANDAL was moving up, had not yet over taken ELEMENTARY or GREY'S ANATOMY in the ratings.

CSI: NY would be cancelled.
Not a huge stretch, but nothing had stood out for CBS to take it's spot. The move of H5O taking the Friday slot was a very smart move.

CBS will expand it's cable presence.
My go to prediction each year, but CBS did buy TV Guide Network. it started out as a 50/50 joint venture with Lionsgate, in March, but by June, it was CBS'.

The beginning of Jay Leno to exiting THE TONIGHT SHOW, again.
Hopefully this will stick. Jimmy Fallon begins his run on February 24, 2014.

FOX failed to win the A18-49 crown for the 2012-13 season
FOX is now on it's second horrible season in the ratings, after a good run of being on top. The future is not bright at FOX.

Cord Cutting would grow and Cable would lose subscribers.
There were countless articled and reports on how cable providers were losing large amounts of subscribers. Cord Cutting is real and will help reshape the TV/video industry.

Two or more cable networks rebranding.
We saw a lot of movement in cable. NBC Sports Network became NBCSN. FOX Soccer became FXX. Current TV became Al Jazeera America. And it was recently announced that BIO will become FYI, a lifestyle network.

Somewhere in the Gray Zone:

The CW will change demographic focus.
Perhaps a small, baby step was taken in 2013. THE TOMORROW PEOPLE appears to be more "general audience" than it's typical series and WHOSE LINE IS IT ANYWAY? will be back for a second season in March 2014. But, the network's other two new fall series fall in the young female demo and, for whatever reason, the renewed THE CARRIE DIARIES for a second season.

More Zombie series.
There were a couple of smaller series productions involving zombies, one being the French series THE RETURNED. It was also announced that AMC is developing a companion series to THE WALKING DEAD, featuring different characters, in another part of the US. The spirit of the prediction was not full filed, but there was more WALKERS on TV.

What I got Completely Wrong:

NBC finishes in 3rd, ABC in 4th at the end of the 2012-13 season.
ABC was second in total viewers, while NBC was just edged out by FOX for 3rd place. In the A18-49 ratings, NBC out rated ABC, placing them in 3rd and 4th places, respectively. This actually covers two separate predictions

THE GOOD WIFE moves to Fridays.
With CSI: NY gone, I thought THE GOOD WIFE was primed for the Friday slot. It stayed on Sundays and HAWAII FIVE-O got the moving papers.

GO ON would be the only NBC sitcom to be renewed for 2013-14.
At the time, the bottom had not fallen out of the series and it was still pulling in decent ratings. It was gone and COMMUNITY and PARKS & REC got renewals.

FOX would have a major overhaul for it's 2013-14 schedule.
FOX kept Sundays, Wednesdays and Thursdays the same, Tuesdays are still all comedies and only added four shows to start the fall 2013 schedule. The changes are more like minor tweeking.

The CW would add another superhero series.
It was looking as if the network would build on the success of ARROW and bring on another superhero series to the schedule. A possible Wonder Woman series was killed early in 2013.

ION-TV will expand it's original programming/Two hour block of originals on one night.
Flash point ended after the 2012-13 season and ION chose not to replace the series with something new, nor add anything else new to the regular schedule. ION did produce some original holiday movies this season.

I went 8-7-2 in my predictions. Not horrible, but should have been a lot better. One thing I learned is to not always follow the rumors or trend of December. They will be dead by sooner than you think.

Look for my 2014 Predictions on New Year's Day. Let's see if I can go a perfect 10-0….
