Ratings Archives: Week of September 7 - 13, 1998
We close out the 1997-98 TV season with the week of September 7 - 13, 1998. With most series in repeats, just before the start of the 1998-99 season, MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL edges THE EMMY AWARDS as the #1 show of the week. The football game drew just over 22 million viewers on the 7th, while THE EMMYS collected 19.4 million viewers.
MLB on FOX actually got good ratings back then, ranking as the #3 show of the week, on a Tuesday night. That ball game hauled in 19 million viewers. But viewers still only had limited options for the sport, with just a couple of national games per week, outside of local team coverage.
NBC ended the season on top, averaging a 9.3 household rating for the season. ABC was second with a 8.7 rating and CBS was a distant third place with a 7.5 average. FOX was still maturing and was a competitive 4th, with a 6.4 rating. The WB topped UPN, 2.8 to 2.5 for the battle of the net-lets.
