US Box Office: Summer 2015 Top 20
The summer movie season is defined as the period between the first weekend in May through Labor Day, the first monday in September. During that time in 2015, JURASSIC WORLD was easily the top movie of the summer, raking in over $200 million more than the #2 movie of the season, AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. JURASSIC WORLD took in $647 million, domestically, and just crossed over the ONE BILLION mark in worldwide receipts.
The surprise as the top was PITCH PERFECT 2, which was the #5 on the summer chart, grossing nearly $184 million. The movie was releases in the early part of "summer, opening in Mid-May.
PIXAR strikes again, giving up the #1 kids movie of the summer, with INSIDE OUT placing 3rd, with $350 million domestically. The movie is still out in theaters, so it will ad a little more to that take, hoping to make the dull year top 20 list.
August movie don't usually do as well, but STRAIGHT OUT OF COMPTON placed 10th during the summer, with plenty of life still in it. COMPTON should pass at least two summers movies in fron to f it, for the year end chart rankings.
For the studios, Universal had three of the top five, including JURASSIC WORLD, and a total of six in the top 20. Disney's production companies brought in four top 20 movie, with the second AVENGERS movie doing the best for the House of the Mouse. Warner Brothers also brought in four movies, but its best release was SAN ANDREAS at #8.
