TV News Roundup: August 12, 2014

  • Robin Williams passes
  • CBS ends 58 year relationship
  • USA renews drama
Robin Williams passes away:
Comedy legend Robin Williams passed away on Monday, August 11. Williams started and ended his career in television. From MORK & MINDY, in the late 70's to last season's THE CRAZY ONES. In between, Robin Williams won an Academy Award for his role in the drama GOOD WILL HUNTING and his portrayal of Mrs. Doubtfire may be one of his best comedic roles.

Williams was not just one of the all-time great comedians, but he was perhaps one of the top two, along with the great Jonathan Winters, improv comedians. His ability to take anything, run with it and make it hilarious is what I will remember most about Williams.

Robin Williams was 63.

USA Renews Drama:
Getting a fifth season renewal by USA is the drama SUITS. The series will get 16 more episodes for its 2015 run.

CBS scraps 58 year relationship with Indy affiliate:
Unable to come to new financial terms with Indianapolis affiliate WISH-TV, CBS Corp will move it's programming to the tribune owned WTTV, beginning January 1, 2015.

CBS had been with WISH for 58 years, starting in 1956. It was the longest TV relationship in the market.

Changing to CBS will mark the 7th network WTTV has been an affiliate for, since being operational in the late 1940's. The station was an early affiliate for ABC, NBC and DuMont, before about 40 years as a successful independent. Since the late 90's the station has been an affiliate for UPN, The WB and, currently, The CW.

WTTV will retain it's affiliation with The CW, moving it to the secondary channel, 4.2

Comedy Central renews late night series:
The comedy late night show @MIDNIGHT, starring Chris Hardwick, has been renewed for a second season.
