Ratings Review: CBS Thursdays - First 4 Weeks
CBS is the #1 network on Thursday nights, but are two new comedies on the night helping?
THE BIG BANG THEORY is the #1 non-sports program on broadcast TV. It is #1 in the A18-49 ratings and is second to NCIS in total viewers. It shows no signs of weakness or aging as the L+SD stay at a high level.
Following BIG BANG is the new sitcom THE MILLERS. It does lose a big chunk of its lead in audience, but has consistently maintained that retention rate each week. Now with a full season order, it should only see growth as viewers start to warm up to it.
THE CRAZY ONES have also received a full season order, but its prospects don't look as rosy. Premiering after BIG BANG, it was very well sampled, but since then it has lost 4 million live viewers. It loses 3 million from the audience THE MILLERS delivers. It is still the #2 program in the time slot and not far off from what GREY'S ANATOMY gets in winning the hour. The comedy needs to show it can bring in viewers to continue beyond Msy 2014.
TWO AND A HALF MEN is little more than an after thought on Thursday nights. It is unable to keep the viewers delivered to it and loses viewership each week. This has to be the last season for the comedy, but if none of the three remaining new comedies hit with audiences, we could see yet another season if the very tired sitcom.
On the surface, ELEMENTARY looks to be a poorly viewed crime drama. But, with the early results of the Live+7 ratings filtering in, it is one of the top gainers in viewership. The latest L+7 numbers, for week 3, it was second in viewership gains to THE BLACKLIST. People are watching the series, just not on Thursdays at 10 p.m. CBS just needs to find a way to leverage those delayed ratings into real income.
