Ratings Review: PARKS & RECREATION (Season Five)
When NBC started cleaning house this past May, PARKS & RECREATION was really the only sitcom to survive. (COMMUNITY was given a stay of execution with a mid-season order.) Although I suspect NBC would love to add something new in the time slot, you need something to anchor your comedies on. Much like the veteran athlete being on an expansion team, that has no chance of winning.
Although the ratings are low, its strength is in the A18-49 ratings. The numbers are not great, but they get a decent number, considering how few people actually watch the program. It was not until February that the series was able to air four episodes in a row and it aired original episodes in three different time slots.
For the 2012-13 season, PARKS & RECREATION averaged 3.06 million viewers and a 1.5 rating in Adults 18-49. The series aired 27 times, including five repeat episodes. Next season, the 6th year comedy will kick off Thursday nights, airing at 8 p.m. I do not expect ratings to do any better than this fifth season. This may be the last season for the series. If any other sitcom does decent ratings, P&R is a goner. Plus original cast member Rashida Jones and Rob Lowe will be leaving the series at mid-season.
