Nielsen TV Ratings Reportedly expanding to Include Streaming Services
The tech and entertainment sites were buzzing today because of a hollywood Reporter article that NIELSEN RATINGS may begin including streaming services within its daily ratings reports. Services like Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu programs streamed to devices like a PS3, Xbox and iPads.
If things go as planned, this would begin in September of 2013, in time for the new TV season. 23,000 Nielsen homes would need to have new hardware and software in place for this to happen. Also, the streaming providers would need to place code within their signals so the Nielsen software can read and trace the source.
This sounds like a win-win for the TV industry. Capturing the ever growing streaming media will allow the networks to more accurately gage the viewing trends of their programs and, of course, monazite and increase ad rates, where applicable.
How much "non traditional" media viewing to you consume ion a given day or week?
