Complete Nielsen Ratings: Week of 12/31/12
The full Nielsen rankings and ratings from #1 to #103:
CBS Kicked off the new year being very aggressive by programming original programming on three of the four regular nights, after New Years Day (excluding Saturdays). THE BIG BANG THEORY was not only the top regular series of the week, it posted series highs in both viewers (19.3 million) and in the A18-49 demographic (6.1 rating). That drawing power was not wasted as all of the Thursday night line up saw season or series highs.
On Friday night all three regular programs made the top 25 chart, in viewers, lead by BLUE BLOODS with 10.2 million viewers and ranking #12 for the week. CBS closed the week on Sunday with decent numbers, despite all four networks airing all original episodes.
Despite the strong numbers by CBS, NBC won the week in both measured categories, lead by the AFC Wild Card Game on Saturday night, the season premiere of THE BIGGEST LOSER and its Wednesday night dramas.
The NFL Playoff Game, in prime time, drew 30.3 million viewers and a 10.5 demo rating on Saturday night. Outside of the FOX NFL overrun on Sunday, the last NFL telecast for NBC this season was the #1 program of the week.
NBC also took advantage of the other networks taking January 2nd off and aired all original episodes of its Wednesday series. As usual, the two comedies (WHITNEY and GUYS WITH KIDS) flopped but LAW & ORDER: SVU and CHICAGO FIRE pulled in their strongest numbers of the season. CHICAGO FIRE won the night with an impressive 8.5 million viewers and a 2.4 demo rating. That was an increase from its L&O: SVU lead in by 800k in viewers and 8% in the demo. The return of THE BIGGEST LOSER on Sunday night helped push NBC over the top as it grabbed 7 million viewers and a strong 3.0 demo rating, against all original programming from ABC, CBS and FOX. However, This may be NBC's last weekly win for a while as it will not have the NFL or THE VOICE to help with the numbers. We will see how quick, if at all, NBC's lead will vanish and how low they will drop by March.
FOX's had two rare wins this week, first with Friday Night's coverage of the Cotton Bowl. The annual game drew 11.9 million viewers and a strong 3.5 demo rating, placing it in the top 10 of the week. On Sunday, the 40 minute NFL overrun drew the biggest audience of the week with just over 38 million viewers. That helped propel the Animation Block to some of their best numbers for the season, lead by THE SIMPSONS with 9 million viewers and a 4.2 demo rating.
ABC had little to celebrate after New Years Day. It best program was the annual New Year's Eve coverage, including a salute to Dick Clark. Once 2013 arrived, only ONCE UPON A TIME made the top 25 by pulling in 9.1 million viewers and a 3.1 demo rating. However, the bottom 25 is littered with ABC programs, mainly from the two sophomore comedies HAPPY ENDINGS and APT. 23, as each had two airing during the week.
