Ratings Archives: Week of Sept. 29, 1997
Week #2 of the 1997-98 TV season looks like a snapshot of the first week. NBC takes the top five spots, with its Thursday line up, and dominates the weekly ratings by a 10% margin. This is when NBC really hit its peak. Almost everything they programmed drew viewers.
In the Sunday movie race, CBS wins the slot with HEART FULL OF RAIN (starring Rick Schroder and Richard Crenna), with 13.9 million viewers and ranked #34. NBC's FIVE DESPERATE HOURS was second with 12 million (#44) viewers. ABC was third with10.5 million viewers (#59) in its presentation of THE ADVOCATE'S DEVIL.
It is interesting to look back at CBS Tuesday Nights at 8:00pm. JAG is lead in off the night and is 3rd in the time slot with just 13.9 million viewers (#35). It would not be long before its spin off series NCIS would come to dominate the time slot, even after 11+ years in production. JAG is certainly the last series to jump networks and make a positive impact.
The battle between UPN and The WB has gotten tighter. No longer does UPN dominate The WB. Just a 0.3 network ratings point separates the two networks. UPN is primarily carried by STAR TREK: VOYAGER and not much else. The WB may not have a breakout hit that comes close to matching ST:V, but its shows are more consistent than those from UPN.
