Ratings Archives: Week of Sept. 22, 1997
I have decided to go back to releasing the archived ratings charts one week at a time. I should allow me to be more consistent with releasing at least one chart per week, every week, instead of multiple weeks at a time, with gaps in between.
The start of the 1997 Fall TV Season:
It was not a good year for launching successful, classic TV series. ALLY MCBEAL on FOX is about the only one from the fall 1997 class to have made it five years. There were plenty of snickers though. CBS' MEEGO, starring Bronson Pinchot. The very similar YOU WISH on ABC. The force feed UNION SQUARE that had THE prime spot for a freshmen series, between FRIENDS and SEINFELD.
UPN and The WB were starting their third season. Both networks were still programming three nights. UPN scheduled shows Monday - Wednesday, while The WB programed Sunday, Monday and Wednesday.
The Week of September 22, 1997:
Not a surprise that NBC came out fast and hard with the top six shows for the week. All five Thursday night programs were the top five, lead by ER with 42.7 million viewers and a 45% share of all TV viewers. New comers VERONICA'S CLOSET, starring Kirstie Alley, and UNION Square finished 3rd and 5th, respectively. VC posted 35.1 million viewers, just 2.7 off from it's SEINFELD lead in. UNION STATION had a bigger drop from FRIENDS, losing almost 4 million viewers. The sixth place show of the week, from NBC, was Tuesday's MAD ABOUT YOU. It pulled in 24.6 million viewers.
Top programs from the other five networks were HOME INPROVEMENT (#7) from ABC, TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL (#8) from CBS, KING OF THE HILL (#36) from FOX, STAR TREK: VOYAGER (#90) from UPN, and from the WB at #94, THE WAYANS BROTHERS.
Top Movie or special for the week was the BARBARA MANDRELL special on CBS Sunday night. it drew 19.9 million viewers, finishing #12 for the week.
