Ratings Archives: September 1997
We finish out the Summer of 1997 with the last three weeks of the 1996-97 TV season. MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL, on ABC, its the top program in two of the three weeks. A repeat of SEINFELD took the middle week with 22.6 million viewers. In fact MNF was only ranked #5 for that week. PRIME TIME LIVE, The Emmy Awards, and 3rd ROCK FROM THE SUN all topped the football game.
The Emmy awards, airing on CBS, drew 18.8 million viewers and a 21 share of households. That was good enough for 3rd place.
The WB and UPN started rolling out their 1997-98 programs a little early to get a jump on the BIG 4 networks. The best showing from each network was 10.3 million viewers on UPN for the season premiere of STAR TREK: VOYAGER and 5.0 million for STEVE HARVEY on September 17th. Both networks are still at just three nights of programming. The WB airs on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday, while UPN is Monday - Wednesday.
During the final week, some of the BIG 4 series started rolling out, a week early. All of the CBS Monday Night line up kicked off its season along with the FOX'sMonday dramas. FOX ABC and CBS all gave us original episodes on Thursday night, Hoping for something to hit against NBC's "Must See TV" line up. CBS, with its attempt to have a TGIF of its own, premiered its Friday night line up.
