US Box Office Results: January 20 - 22, 2017
Two new releases top this weekend's box office, with the M. Night Shyamalan film, SPLIT taking the top spot. The horror/thriller hauled in an impressive $40.2 million in its first three days of release, averaging over $13k per screen. This is the best opening for an Shyamalan since 2010's THE LAST AIRBENDER.
The third movie of the xXx franchise was second, collecting half the revenues of SPLIT. The release did better than 2005's xXx: STATE OF THE UNION, but is a far cry from the first film's $$44.5 million take, in 2002.
There was one other new release on the week, in just 1,115 theaters, As THE FOUNDER grosses $3.8 million.
ROGUE ONE is still chugging along in the #6 spot. In its sixth week, the STAR WARS film has brought in over $512 million domestically, and just over $1 billion world wide.
