Complete Nielsen Ratings: June 16 - 22, 2014
The full Nielsen rankings and ratings from #1 to #92:
The 3rd week of June showed that no one network is dominating the summer TV landscape. Most of the ratings categories has multiple networks tying or battling for the top spot. FOX looks good in the young demographics, while CBS does well in total viewers and house holds. NBC is the most well-rounded network and ABC is just along for the ride.
A look at the programming of each network is worth a quick look.
Up until now, CBS has pretty much aired nothing but repeats, since the end of the May sweeps. Only 48 HOURS has had original summer episodes. With all the repeats, CBS leads in total viewership and is competitive in most of the demographic ratings.
In contrast, NBC and FOX have scheduled that dominated by original programming. This past week, NBC showed 13 hours of original programming, and previous weeks featured even more hours. FOX, to a lesser success, had over half of it's 15 hour schedule filled with new shows. These two networks have had opposite success in their strategies, but neither are on the extreme ends of the ratings.
ABC, which just came off two weeks of NBA infused ratings, fell back to normal, holding third place with a firm grip. This past week the network had the most new hours of programming (17) than of the other broadcast networks, yet looked no better than CBS with their numbers.
As the dog-days of July and August hit the networks and original programing rams up even further, will the ratings reflect the efforts to keep viewers with the Big 4? For every AMERICA'S GOT TALENT, that draws a lot of viewers, we have four or five RIOT or I WANT TO MARRY HARRY. Original programming does not automatically mean a rise in the ratings.
