TV News Roundup: Week of January 6, 2014

SNL bulks up its cast, Hello MR. ROBINSON, WWE Network launch set, a DVR for Cord-Cutter and much more.

MONDAY:
  • SNL adds cast member:
    Formerly of the UCB, SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE adds Sasheer Zamata to the cast.. 
  • Six episodes for MR. ROBINSON:
    NBC has given a six episode order for the single camera comedy MR. ROBINSON, starring Craig Robinson, Jean Smart and Larenz Tate.
  • New ABC Family Comedies:
    ABC Family picked up the comedies YOUNG & HUNGRY and MYSTERY GIRLS  and the will premiere later in 2014.
TUESDAY:
  • FOX picks up BACKSTORM:
    FOX has ordered 13 episodes of the drama BACKSTORM, produced and starring Rainn Wilson.
WEDNESDAY:
  • Time Warner Cable losses 215k subscribers in 2013 Q4:
    Still feeling the effects of the CBS battle, TWC has lost 215,000 video subscribers in the last quarter of 2013.
  • More new SNL cast members:
    SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE has added LaKendra Tookes and Leslie Jones, both African-American women, as cast members.
THURSDAY:
  • Military Channel will become the American Heroes Channel:
    Starting March 3, 2014, the cable network will rebranded as the American Heroes Channel
  • WWE Network launches in February:
    The WWE Netowrk will launch February 24, 2014 as a steaming service, not a cable channel. The service will be $9.99 per month with a 6 month contract. Look for apps on gaming consoles and Roku/Chromecast devices.
  • More Tyler Perry on OWN:
    The OWN network has ordered a fourth series from Tyler Perry, titled SINGLE MOMS CLUB. The series will premiere in the fall of 2014.
  • More awards shows:
    CBS has signed a multi-year agreement to air the HOLLYWOOD FILM AWARDS, from Dick Clark Productions.
  • Whole home DVR solution for cord cutters:
    Channel Master is developing a non subscription based DVR system for recording programs via antenna. [LINK]
FRIDAY:
  • MOONBEAM CITY gets the green light:
    Animated series MOONBEAM CITY has been picked up for 10 episodes by Comedy Central.
  • ABC axes series after two weeks:
    Limited run series THE ASSETS was cancelled by ABC after two very low rated episodes. [LINK]
