TV News Roundup: Week of October 21, 2013

Aereo to begin in new market, NBA games soon to be online, NBC to resurrect another classic series, and you may get HBO as a stand alone product.

MONDAY:
  • Aereo in Detroit launching Monday:
    Aereo's newest market, Detroit, will begin services on Monday, October 28th.
  • SYFY renews competition series:
    SYFY reality series FACE OFF has been renewed for a 6th run.
TUESDAY:
  • Netflix on the rise:
    Streaming service Netflix has reached the 40 million subscriber level, 31 million which are domestic customers. It is on the verge of passing HBO in total subscribers.
  • Speaking of Netflix, FX will compete with its own service:
    FX Network is launching a multi-channel app that would compete with Netflix, using its library of resources in movies and TV.
  • Showtime renews two dramas:
    The new series MASTERS OF SEX and veteran HOMELAND have been picked up for another season.
WEDNESDAY:
  • NBA Game Live, on your tablet/smartphone:
    The NBA is clearing the way to allow live local streaming of your favorite NBA teams games. This would affect those teams with local contracts on cable services.
  • Cable via A La Bundle?:
    The American Cable Association is proposing cable companies to start offering services via select bundles and not all or nothing. 
THURSDAY:
  • MURDER, SHE WROTE back from the dead?:
    NBC is look to reboot yet another classic drama, this time its the classic CBS series MURDER SHE WROTE. The network has committed to a put pilot, which means we will see at least the one episode on TV.
  • Same network, new reality series for The Rock:
    Dwayne THE ROCK Johnson is working on a new reality series, WAKE UP CALL for TNT, the same network that aired THE HERO this past summer.
  • SUITS go for 4:
    USA has renewed is drama SUITS for a 4th season.
FRIDAY:
  • MTV releases all episodes of football series:
    The new season of the MTV series WAIT 'TILL NEXT YEAR will will be released in its entirety via apps on iPad, iPhone and Xbox before it premieres next Friday.
  • HBO to be offered alone via Comcast:
    Comcast will be offring a package that is just HBO, local broadcast channels, VOD and internet for under $50. It will initially only be available in certain test market before deciding on a national roll out.
  • CBS looking at remaking WB series:
    CBS Studios has ordered a pilot script for rebooting the WB series CHARMED. Nothing beyond a script order has been set.
  • Third FOX sitcom get full season:
    Low rated freshmen comedy series DADS received a full season order from FOX.
  • DROP DEAD DIVA gets another season:
    Despite almost not getting a fifth season, Lifetime has renewed veteran drama DROP DEAD DIVA for a sixth season.
