NBC dominated the rating for the week of January 12, 1998. The Peacock Network averaged an 11.4 rating, while second place CBS managed just an 8.9 rating. That is a 28% advantage for NBC.

The top 8 programs are all NBC shows, lead by ER with a 23.1 household rating, and a 37 share, drawing 34.4 million viewers. The entire Thursday night NBC line up are included in this top 8 dominance.

In total, NBC placed 13 programs in the top 20. ABC managed to get four programs in the Top 20, with NYPD BLUE (#11) as its top show. CBS grabbed the remaining three spots.

NBC's presentation of the GOLDEN GLOBE awards was the week's top special, collecting 24.3 million viewers, finishing in 5th place. Some of the top awards were given to TITANIC (Best Picture), AS GOOD AS IT GETS (Best Comedy Movie), THE X-FILES (Best TV Drama) and ALLY McBEAL (Best TV Comedy).

Top network movie for the week was BEST FRIENDS FOR LIFE, starring Gena Rowlands and Linda Lavin. The CBS Sunday night movie drew 14 million viewers, placing 30th for the week.
