Ratings Review: THE NEW NORMAL

Cancelled or renewed, THE NEW NORMAL did go further than most thought it would. We al thought it would be either the first series cancelled by any network, or at the very least, the first to be cancelled by NBC. THE NEW NORMAL made it to a full season.

The series actually was looking like a decent entry for NBC. There was no viewership loss from the two night premiere in early September. Even the second week had minimal loss of viewership. But as the season progressed, after its full season back-order, viewership slowly began to decline.

THE NEW NORMAL's ratings were artificially inflated by the residual effects of THE VOICE at 8 p.m. Both it and GO ON saw dramatic drops in the ratings once the hit sining competition was no longer airing before them.

Viewership immediately dropped by 25% after the new year and was less than half by February, compared to its November sweeps numbers. Its late season rise in the ratings was, once again, by having THE VOICE as a lead in into the 9 p.m. comedies. For the season, THE NEW NORMAL averaged 4 million viewers and a 1.5 demo rating. I highly doubt NBC will give the series a second season.
