Ratings Review: GOSSIP GIRL

GOSSIP GIRL was once the face of The CW. But the ratings started to fall after the second season and things were never the same and GOSSIP GIRL was done after 5 1/2 seasons.

Premiering on September 19, 2007 to decent ratings, for The CW. It averaged 2.35 million viewers and a 1.2 rating in Adults 18-49. Season two saw the numbers go up to nearly 2.5 million viewers and a 1.4 demo rating. Season three was not as kind. it dropped to just 2.02 million viewers and it would be the last time it rose above the 2 million mark. It was also the last time the series would draw a demo rating above a 1.0, as it drew a 1.1 ratings mark for the third season.

Seasons 4 - 6 were all about the same thing. Large erosion of viewer and demo numbers, from the previous season. Once the series hit the episode mark for syndication, The CW gave it one last 1/2 season to wrap things up.

I saw GOSSIP GIRL being that series that reflected The CW. Going after that young, female demographic, while abandoning any chance of large audiences. It was an all or nothing senario. and, in my opinion, The CW is left with nothing.
