Previewing Fall 2012 Thursday Nights.

Come September 2012, CBS has let everyone know that it wants to own every half hour of Thursday nights. NBC and the CW have no problem with it, but FOX and ABC will give them a fight.

Thursday Nights at 8:00pm
Lets start with the lower rated shows first. The CW may have a chance to out rate NBC in this hour. THE VAMPIRE DIARIES is the strongest CW series and it will be up against the very week comedies of NBC (30 ROCK and UP ALL NIGHT). Both networks will be around that 3 million viewer mark for the hour.

CBS is not playing around anymore. It tried for two season to find a hit to follow THE BIG BANG THEORY, but no such luck. Now, in what should be the finale season, TWO AND A HALF MEN will be partnered with THE BIG BANG THEORY for what could be the strongest hour of comedy in over a decade. We could see an average of 14-15 million viewers and a 5.0 in the demo ratings. Not only will CBS win the hour, but it should give a nice bump for the rest of the night.

FOX will again feature THE X-FACTOR and it should be a solid second place. ABC my have one of the more interesting dramas debuting in September. LAST RESORT looks like a well made and cast action thriller. Unfortunately, it is airing at 8pm Thursdays and will be 3rd place, at best.

Thursdays at 9:00pm
The hit 2011-12 freshman drama, PERSON OF INTEREST is back and with its strong lead in it should give a reinvigorated GREY'S ANATOMY and THE X_FACTOR  a run for its money in the 18-49 demo ratings. POI should easily be the #1 show in viewers, perhaps in the 14-16 million viewer range. GREY'S will battle with X-FACTOR for #2 in the viewers race.

Again, playing to not be last, NBC has the very tired THE OFFICE and PARKS & REC. Both should average around 3-4 million viewers and around a 2 demo rating. The CW will have a more compatible series at 9pm to build off THE VAMPIRE DIARIES. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST will hook the young women that a love this type of drama. it could be enough to challenge NBC for 4th place in the hour.

Thursdays at 10:00pm
NBC is not even trying at 10:00pm. The very low rated ROCK CENTER WITH BRIAN WILLIAMS will not do a thing in the ratings. It is nothing more than time filler.

ABC is back with SCANDAL, which didn't post huge numbers this spring, but it stayed very consistent and solid out of GREY'S. It should see a small boost in numbers with ROCK CENTER in the hour, but its not a show that could challenge CBS for the win.

CBS' entry in the hour will be the new crime drama ELEMENTARY. a re-imaging of Sherlock Holmes in modern day NYC, with a female Watson. Personally, I think this is a huge mistake by CBS. It will be compared to the BBC/PBS series, SHERLOCK, which also features a modern day Holmes. And I can tell from the preview of ELEMENTARY that SHERLOCK is a far superior series and fans of the BBC version will, more than likely, not be watching the CBS version. However, with all that, CBS will easily win the hour, but the retention numbers will be below the acceptable levels of CBS and we could see a new series come February 2013.

Thursday night will be dominated by CBS. The only chance of them not taking the night is ABC's LAST RESORT surprises everyone with great ratings and ELEMENTARY is a complete bomb from the start.
