Pilot Review: Free Agents
FREE AGENTS is not a "laugh out loud" sitcom, but it is a cleverly written comedy... well, romantic comedy.
For the most part, the cast and characters are well done, with exception of the security guard. He was a little too much. He seemed to be the odd ball in an office that everyone else gels together. Hank Azaria is perfect for this role. He is a neurotic, but keeps it real. Very believable. I really like the casting of Kathryn Hahn. She is attractive, but, again, very real. I can believe that these two people are attracted to each other. She give a strong personality to the character that you don't see a lot in comedies.
The one character that does stand out, in the pilot, is Gregg, played by Al Madrigal. (At first, I thought it was David Cross, in a wig.) I really like how he plays the character. GREGG is one of those characters that can subtly steal the show.
The rest of the cast is OK. You have the creepy boss, the obnoxious co-worker and the sassy secretary.... er.... Executive Assistant. Not much to go on from the pilot though. We'll see how future episodes handle them.
As for the plot, its straight forward. Newly divorced 40-something man (Hank Azaria) secretly hooks up with a co-worker (Kathryn Hahn), but has second thoughts afterwards. The underlying story line for the series is IF/WHEN they will accept their new relation & make it public.
Chances for survival for FREE AGENTS will be tough. Going against both Survivor and X-Factor is a killer task, but I so believe it has a chance to beat ABC's Suburgatory at 8:30pm. That is, as long as the lead in UP ALL NIGHT can deliver a half-way decent audience.
For me, I think I may have to DVR this new series. It has potential to be really good.
