US Box Office Results: December 15 - 17, 2017
To no one's surprise, STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI was this weekend's #1 movie. It just a matter of how much would it gross in its first weekend of release? Well, the take was $220 million, the second biggest opening ever, $28 million behind 2015's SW: THE FORCE AWAKENS. THE LAST JEDI is already the #10 movie of the year, passing JUSTICE LEAGUE in just three days of release. The movie should easily be in the top 5 by this time, next week.
FOX's new animated movie, FERDINAND, took in $13 million in its first weekend, about a eighth of its production budget.
Off the chart, the new movie, THE SHAPE OF WATTER (#12) grossed $1.7 million in just 158 theaters. That is an average of $11,000 , topping every top 10 movie, except STAR WARS.
