2017-18 Preview: Monday Nights
The five broadcast networks released their 2017 fall schedules and now it is time to review how things stack up, night-by-night. Who took a step forward and who took a step back.
This NBC was the top dog on Monday nights and looks to have improved their 10 PM slot with new drama, THE BRAVE. It will have a strong sampling, but with CBS having a similar series in SEAL TEAM, will viewers want to follow two shows so similar? THE VOICE should continue to rule the younger demographic ratings, but the ratings have been slipping each season.
DANCING WITH THE STARS should hold steady, depending on the lineup of stars for the fall edition. DWTS does just as well as THE VOICE in the A18-34 demographic, lately, and usually draws a larger audience. THE GOOD DOCTOR is a solid entry and outside of GREY'S ANATOMY, there is not a hot medical drama on TV. THE GOOD DOCTOR may start slow, but I could see a slow increase of viewership as the season progresses.
After Thursday night football is over, CBS sticks with comedy on the night, with KEVIN CAN WAIT returning to anchor the night. New sitcom, 9JKL is a typical, 3-camera sitcom, but looks vastly better than THE GREAT INDOORS or MAN WITH A PLAN. At 9 PM, CBS has a single camera comedy that has the potential to be a hit, with ME MYSELF & I. It will look at a single character at three phases of his life, past (pre-teen), present (30+) and future (60+). SUPERIOR DONUTS is the weak link of the night, as it leads into SCORPION. SCORPION should do well, but will not dominate, if it even wins, the 10 PM time slot.
FOX trades one superhero series for another, on the night, as GOTHAM moves to Thursdays and THE GIFTED slides into Mondays. Fresh blood could help the night, as Marvel has few misses with its series.FOX will still rank fourth on the night.
With GOTHAM gone, SUPERGIRL could see a boost in its ratings. The trailer for VALOR has not yet been released, but could be the series that holds a high percentage of viewers, out of SUPERGIRL.
