US Box Office Results: July 15 - 17, 2016
The remake of the 80's classic movie, GHOSTBUSTERS, had a good opening weekend, but nothing great. The all-female cast generated just $46 million in its first three days, finishing second behind last week's #1, THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS. Thirty-two years ago, the orignal GHOSTBUSTERS made $13.5 million its first weekend of release, on its way to a total domestic take of $229 million. The 2016 version will be lucky to come close to it $144 million dollar production budget.
THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS crossed the $200 million mark in its first ten days of release. putting it #8 overall, for the year. That puts five animated films within the top 15 of this year's chart.
The other new release for this weekend, was THE INFLITRATOR, starring BREAKING BAD's Bryan Cranston, placed 8th on the weekend, with $5.3 million, but in less than half the theaters the top movis are in. It had the third best per screen average, behind PETS and GHOSTBUSTERS.
