US Box Office Results: July 1 - 4, 2016

For the third weekend in a row, FINDING DORY is the #1 movie in America. The Pixar sequel added another $50 million to its total of over $380 million, domestically. That currently puts DORY as the #2 movie of the year, just $25 million behind CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR.

Also from Disney, THE LEGEND OF TARZAN had a nice opening weekend, hauling in $45.6 million in its first four days. That will project out to around $150 million total, domestically, far short of its $180 million production budget.

Also new to theaters was THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR, placing third with $35 million. Within THE URGE series of films, it wedges right in between the 2013 original and 2014's sequel opening weekends. At just $10 million to produce, THE PURGE is no nothing but profit for Universal/Platinum Dunes.

On the disappoint side of the chart, new family movie, THE BFG, only collected $22 million in its first weekend. With a $140 production budget, it will fall way short of break even, with its domestic take.
