US Box Office Results: March 25 - 27, 2016
BATMAN B SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE lived up to all the hype and criticism, collecting a whopping $170 million in its first weekend of release. It is the sixth best opening of all time, behind Three Marvel movies, JURASSIC PARK and, of course, STAR WARS VII. The opening is over $50 million above 2013's MAN OF STEEL, a great sign for the future of the property. Worldwide, the DC comics movie hauled in a $424 million, about $175 million above its $250 million production budget.
The only other new movie in the top 10 was MY BIG, FAT , GREEK WEDDING 2, of which I didn't even know was being made, let alone coming out this weekend. The seqel to the 2002 original was the #3 movie of the weekend, bringing in over $18 million.
After 101 days of release, and coming out on Blu-Ray in two weeks, STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS ranked 13th on the weekend, scoring another $800k in about 500 theaters. The #1 domestic movie of all time currently has a total take of $934 million.
