US Box Office Results: February 26 - 28, 2016

The big budget, period action movie, GODD OF EGYPT, was not big enough to dethrone DEADPOOL from the top spot of this weekend's box office chart. GODS OF EGYPT only brought in $14 million in its first weekend, just one tenth of its production budget. Meanwhile, DEADPOOL took in another $31.5 million, securing a third week onto of the chart and a total of $286 million, domestically. It has officially topped STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS as the top grossing film since January 1, 2016.

Two other new, wide releases only took in a little over six million each, EDDIE THE EAGLE and TIPPLE 9. Both movies were in over 2,000 theaters, but will be lucky to reach the $20 million level be the end of their respective runs.

STAR WARS is nearing the end of its theatrical run, falling out of the top 10 for the first time since its December 18, 2015 release. The movie should fall short of $950 million, domestically, but is #1 movie here in the states. Worldwide, the movie will end up third on the all time list, with a total of somewhere around $2.1 billion. Had it had a better take in China, just $125 million, it could have easily taken the #1 spot from AVATAR.
