US Box Office Results: January 8 - 10, 2016
STAR WARS had it first weekend of actual competition for the #1 weekend spot, but it was able to fight off THE REVENANT and win by $3.6 million. It is the fourth straight weekend win for STAR WARS and caps off a week where the film became the all-time highest grossing domestic movie, now with $812 million, topping AVATAR. Worldwide, STAR WARS has brought in $1.7 billion.
THE REVENANT, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, took in a solid $38 million in its first weekend of wide release. That should all the movie to reach $100 million for its run, but the film cost $135 million to produce.
The horror movie, THE FORREST was the weekends only new release, hauled in $13 million, for 4th place. That already covers the $10 million production budget, as it should reach the $40 million level by the time it leaves theaters.
