US Box Office Results: January 29 - 31, 2016
The third installment of KUNG FU PANDA franchise became became the #1 movie of the weekend and the #1 animated movie opening in January, with $41 million in its first three days. But, of the three movies, it is the weakest opening. Five years ago, KFP2 opened with $5.6 million more and the first movie, in 2008, opened 50% larger.
Last weekend's #1 movie, THE REVENANT, dropped to #2, collecting $12.4 million. The movie has grossed over $138 million, topping its production budget of $135.
Two other movies opened this weekend, the drama THE FINEST HOURS and the parody film FIFTY SHEDS OF BLACK. THE FINEST HOURS ranked 4th, with $10.3 million, while the Marlon Wayan film, FIFTY SHADES OF BLACK, grossed just $6.2 million. It was the worst opening for a Wayons film in 18 years.
