US Box Office Results: December 18 - 20, 2015

It was a no-brainer that STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS would be the #1 film this weekend, but it grabbed a handful records along with it. It had the biggest preview night (Thursday) with $56 million. The biggest opening day (Friday+Thursday) with $120 million, and the biggest opening weekend, with 238 million. In just its first three days it is already the #7 film of the year. With 11 days left in 2015. it has a good chance of making it to the #2 spot, needing just another $220 million to make it.

Internationally, STAR WARS: TFA ad brought in $279 million, for a grand total of $517 million, its first weekend out. it takes another $2.2 billion to top AVATAR as the #1 worldwide movie and $520 million for the #1 domestic title.

There were four other new movies that made the top 10. The latest ALVIN & THE CHIPMUNKS collected $14.4 million for the #2 spot and the comedy, SISTERS< brought in $13.3 million for the #3 spot.

Two limited release films, DILWALE and BAJIRAO, in around 28-300 screens, each took in over $1.5 million, for the #9 and #10 spots, respectively.
