US Box Office Results: July 31 - August 2, 2015
New movies top this weekend's chart, as the fifth movies of both MISSION IMPOSSIBLE and VACATION take spots one and two, respectively.
MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: ROGUE NATION collected $56 million its first three dyes, while in just under 4,000 theaters. It is the second best opening weekend for the franchise, behind MI:II, and is vastly better the GHOST PROTOCOL (2011) take of just $12.8 million. But the 4th movie did not open nation wide its first weekend.
The continuation of the VACATION franchise was a very distant second place, bringing in just under $15 million this weekend, and over $21 million since its Wednesday opening. It is the best opening of the franchise, but it has been 18 years since the last movie, 1997's VEGAS VACATION. It should easily pass VEGAS ($36 million) and EUROPEAN ($49 million) editions, but will struggle to match the original 1983 movie's box office ($61 million), or the top performing CHRISTMAS VACATION ($71 million).
ANT-MAN's total domestic take matched its production budget, now totaling just over $130 million. PIXELS loses over 55% of its opening weekend receipts and is pretty much doomed to not make back its $88 million production costs.
After two months of release, JURASSIC WORLD, ranking 10th, may have had its last weekend in the top 10. In that time, it has collected over $630 million, domestically, and a worldwide total of $1.56 Billion. It will finish as the #3 movie of all-time, both domestically and worldwide.
