US Box Office Results: May 15 - 17, 2015
PITCH PERFECT 2 was too much for MAD MAX. Musical comedy collected a strong $70.3 million, its first weekend out. That is nearly five time the gross, for the first three days, than the first movie made. It is more than the total domestic gross ($48 million) of that first movie made. PP2 also had the best per screen average, at over $20,000 per screen.
The much anticipated MAD MAX: FURY ROAD was a strong second place, drawing over $44 million. But, with a production budget at $150 million, it will have a very hard time recouping that number by the end of its run. MAD MAX's strength will come from the Worldwide totals, where it has already topped $65 million, outside of the US.
Week three of AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, has it at over $370 million, domestically. It's world wide total is $1.14 billion, and it is still going strong. It is now the #1 movie of the year and has moved into the #25 spot, for all time.
