US Box Office Release: January 16 - 19, 2014
AMERICAN SNIPER was the clear winner of the holiday weekend box office, hauling in over $105 million over the four day weekend. Although the movie has been our since Christmas, this was the first weekend of wide release for the Oscar nominated film. AMERICAN SNIPER's per screen average was over $29,600.
AMERICAN SNIPER broke the January Record for a film, previously held by RIDE ALONG, by more than twice the 2014's film took in. This is also on track to be Clint Eastwood's biggest directorial hit, topping both GRAND TORINO ($148 million) and MILLION DOLLAR BABAY ($100 million)
The English film, PADDINGTON, based on the children's books, collected over $25 million in its first weekend of release. The small film's success may be a bit of a surprise, as most January releases are not expected to do much in the box office. With the top three films commanding over a combined $155 million, perceptions and release strategies may be changing.
The latest Kevin Hart comedy THE WEDDING RINGER was the #3 movie of the weekend, just behind PADDINGTON, with $24.5 million. However, it ranks towards the bottom of opening 3-day weekend releases, of the recent Kevin Hart films. Only TOP FIVE and GRUDGE MATCH did worse.
In wide release, but tanking at the box office was the Chris Hemsworth film BLACK HAT. The hacker drama could only muster $4.4 million, over its first four days, ranking 11th on the weekend. The $70 million movie only averaged $1,700 per screen.
