US Box Office Results: October 7 - 19, 2014
As expected, the new Brad Pitt movie, FURY, was the #1 movie at this weekend's box office, but the total weekend take was much lower than what was expected. The movie hauled in just $23.5 million, the lowest total by a top weekend film, since the first weekend of the "fall movie season" (Sept. 5-7), when GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY brought in $10 million. This is the second best, live action opening for Brad Pitt, in the last five years (WORLD WAR Z drew $66 million), but is far shy to what the actor could do with any movie's opening weekend.
GONE GIRL continues to do well, now in its third weekend. The movie collected another $18 million and placed second on the chart. It is the first fall release movie to bring in over $100 million, with a current total take of $107 million.
The other two new wide releases, THE BOOK OF LIFE and THE BEST OF ME finished in 3rd and fifth places, respectively, each bringing in a little more than a third of its total production budget. Each movie will come close to break even, with their respective domestic takes.
