US Box Office Results: August 8 - 10, 2014

Dude! The reboot TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES was the week was the top movie of the weekend, grabbing $65 million opening, about half of the movie's production budget. That is an increase of about 16% ($40 million) from the original movie's opening weekend, 24 years ago. But, the 2014 movie is in neatly twice as many theater screens and movie prices are also about twice what they were in 1990. With a successful opening weekend, I think we can expect a followup movie to come in the very near future.

Last week's #1 movie, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, dropped $53 million (57%) from last week's take, to claim the #2 spot, this week. The 10 day total for the movie is above $17 million, domestically, matching it's production budget.

The two of the other new movies of the week, INTO THE STORM and THE HUNDRED FOOT JOURNEY, took spots three and four. both did relatively well, for the type of movies they are. Both should make at least Their production budgets back.

  2. $41.5 million - Guardians of the Galaxy
  3. $18.0 million - Into The Storm
