US Box Office Results: July 4 - 6, 2014
There were three new wide release films this weekend, but just two mad the top five, and neither of those two films could over take the #1 spot from the TRANSFORMERS movie.
TAMMY, the latest comedy from Melissa McCarthy, collected $32.9 million since it's opening on Wednesday, July 2nd. That is more than 50% more than it's production budgets. Of her last three movies (including THE HEAT and IDENTITY THIEF), this is the lowest opening of the trio. But, it may also be the least promoted of the the three. I was not aware this was a Melissa McCarthy movie until recently. I have seen few ads on TV, the web or in print.
At #2, was the Eric Bana horror flick DELIVER US FROM EVIL. It's total holiday releasr take was over $15 million, with most of that coming during the weekend.
Failing to make the top five, was the kids sci-fi movie EARTH TO ECHO. It made just $13.5 million over the long holiday and just $8.3 million since Friday. The movie looks so much like 8MM, by JJ Abrams, that some of the scenes looked identical to the older movie.
- $36.4 million - Transformers: Age of Extinction
- $21.7 million - Tammy
- $9.5 million - Deliver Us From Evil
- $9.4 million - 22 Jump Street
- $8.8 million - How to Train Your Dragon 2
