US Box Office Results: July 18 - 20, 2014
Three new films had wide releases this weekend, but none of them were a match for DAWN OF THE PLANET F THE APES, which was the #1 film, for the second straight weekend.
APES collected another $36 million, bringing to it's total gross revenue to $139 million. The second film of the rebooted franchise is now less than $40 million away from topping the 2011 film. Worldwide, the movie is at $240.5 million.
Topping the new releases was THE PURGE ANARCHY, bringing in 28.4 million. it is already a winner with it's small $9 million budget and out performed bigger titles, PLANES: FIRE & RESCUE ($18 million) and the much anticipated comedy SEX TAPE ($15 million).
Next week we will see if HERCULES (starring The Rock) and/or LUCY (starring Scarlett Johansson) can knock of DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES from the top of the chart.
