TOP 10: 2014 Theatrical Movies at Mid Point
Today's TOP 10 looks at the top grosing movies of 2014 for the first half of the year (January - June). The list includes 2013 releases, but with only their 2014 grosses.
10) FROZEN:
One of the most successful Disney animated films of all time continued it's 2013 success into 2014. Of it's $400+ million total take, $137.6 million of it came on or after after January 1, 2014.
9) 22 JUMP STREET:
Released in mid-June, the comedy sequel has taken $142.7 million in it's first 18 days of release. With a whole lot of summer still to come, expect 22 JUMP STREET to make the $200 million level before it ends it's run.
8) NEIGHBORS:
Currently the best performing comedy on the chart, the Zac Efron/ Seth Rogan comedy quickly won audiences over, in the early part of the summer movie season. Now, mostly out of theaters, the total gross receipts for the film are $147.4 million.
7) DIVERGENT:
The next book-to-movie franchise got off to a solid start, with the first movie of the series. With an $85 million budget, the film surpassed that figure for a total domestic take of $150.6 million. The next two movie will be released a year after the preceding movie, in March of 2015 and 2016, respectively.
6) GODZILLA (2014):
The monster remake was one of the more anticipated movie of the year, did not disappoint Warner Brothers Studios. After seven weeks of release, GODZILLA brought in over $197.1 million, in the domestic box office. It has a small chance of reaching the $200 million level before ending it's theatrical run.
5) THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2:
Spider-Man fatigue feels like it has set in, with five movies and a reboot within 12 years, this is a tired franchise. But, the crowds don't have the same feeling as I do. Just crossing the $200 million level, the second film of the rebooted franchise has a total take of $200.4 million. It's international take is two and a half times that, with a world wide gross of over $700 million.
4) MALEFICENT:
I almost fully expected this film to be a major flop for Disney. But, it has turned out to be Angelina Jolie's biggest hit. after five weeks of release, and still going strong, the retelling of Sleeping Beauty has racked up over $203.4 million, in the US.
3) X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST:
This is the fifth X-MEN movie and the seventh of the FOX franchise, but unlike SPIDER-MAN, it is still going strong. Six week's into it's theatrical release, the film has a grand domestic total of $224.0 million. That more than covers the $200 million production budget, and allows the nearly $500 million international take to be almost pure profit.
2) THE LEGO MOVIE:
Who would have thought that the top animated movie would come from Warner Brothers? The LEGO MOVIE too the US by storm and brought in over $257 million domestically. Not bad for a movie that cost just $60 million to make.
1) CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER
It was the first of the "summer movies" to come out into theaters and it has reaped those benefits. After 13 weeks of release, the Marvel superhero movie is still in theaters, bringing in the money. It's current domestic total is $257.2 million, on a budget of $170 million. Add in the international grosses and the second CAPTAIN AMERICA MOVIE has a world wide take of over $711 million.
