Ratings: Broadcast Finals for February 2, 2014
It was Super bowl Sunday and that means there is nothing else on TV, worth mentioning, other than the BIG game and the post-game show that follows. So, lets get to the FOX numbers.
It was another record year for the big game as 112.2 million viewers tuned in to see the SEAHAWKS blow out the BRONCOS. That was just a tick, or one million, more viewers that watched the 2012 game, also involving a Manning in the game. SUPER BOWL XLVIII is now the most watched program in the USA. Had the game not been a blow out early, I believe the viewership average could have gone above 115 million.
The game also became the most viewed live streamed ever for a sports event, averaging an audience level of 528,000 per minute. The live stream recorded a total of 5.5 million unique visitors to the live stream.
NEW GIRL, which followed the post-game show, recorded 26.3 million viewers for the half hour episode, starting at 10:25 p.m., ET. That is a better number than THE OFFICE drew in 2009 or what the Simpsons drew in 2005. It is the best numbers, for a sitcom, that followed the super bowl since 3rd ROCK FROM THE SON collected 33.7 million viewers in 1998.
BROOKLYN NINE-NINE did get just over 15 million viewers, which had a starting time of just before 11 p.m. Not a horrible number, but is about the best that can be expected when airing two half hour comedies after the big game.
Of course, the benefits of the huge audience sample will come tonight, when NEW GIRL AND BROOKLYN NINE-NINE air in their regular time slots. I fully expect season Tuesday night highs for the comedies, but still a huge drop off from the Sunday ratings.
Didn't like the choices of NEW GIRL and BROOKLYN in the post-Super Bowl Slot? What FOX program would you have picked? RAKE? One of the animated Comedies? BONES? ALMOST HUMAN?
