TV News Roundup: Week of December 30, 2013

Tribune strengthens affiliates, Bruce and The Good Wife, and the lost of one of our favorite TV Dads.

MONDAY:
  • DirectTV alternate weather station:
    Direct TV has added WeatherNation to it's line up as carriage talks begin with The Weather Channel. This will give DirectTV leverage to keep fees at a minimum. 
  • Tribune closes acquisition deal:
    In a $2.7 billion deal of local TV stations, Tribune Company is now the #1 FOX affiliate group and the #1 CW affiliate, each with 14 stations. Tribune now has 39 stations that represent all five networks. 
  • Tim Tebow to SEC:
    ESPN hires former NFL QB Tim Tebow for the new SEC Network and will contribute to other ESPN college studio programs.
TUESDAY:
  • James Avery passes away:
  • THE FRESH PRINCE OF BEL-AIRE's Uncle Phil passed away on December 31, 2013, of complications after heart surgery.
WEDNESDAY:
  • HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!: 
THURSDAY:
  • The Boss uses THE GOOD WIFE:
    Bruce Springsteen will use THE GOOD WIFE to debut his new album HIGH HOPES. [LINK
  • CBS to stream playoffs:
    The network will stream all the games it airs during the 2013 NFL playoffs.
  • ABC to restrict online viewing of shows:
    If your cable provider is not part of the TV Everywhere authentication system, you will not be able to watch full episodes of any ABC program.
  • Supreme Court for Aereo?:
    The highest court in the US will decide on January 10th if it will hear the Aereo vs Broadcasters case. If taken, this could ultimate decide if Aereo can rent customers an antenna for over the air broadcasters and access them via the internet.
FRIDAY:
  • FOX to stream Super Bowl:
    FOX announced it will stream the Super Bowl online, for free, this February. It will also stream all of it's NFC playoff games, but those games will require authentication from certain cable providers.
  • HOUSE OF CARDS directors commentary:
    Netflix has made available the directors commentary for the first season episodes of HOUSE OF CARDS.
