TV News Roundup: Week of September 30, 2013

This week in the news, we get our first 2013 full season orders, our first pick ups for 2014 and the first cancellation of the season.

MONDAY:
  • Hillary Clinton projects killed:
    A documentary on CNN and a mini-series on NBC, about Hillary Clinton, have been scrapped. Pressure from Republicans on a conflict of interest by the networks had a hand in the cancellation of the two projects.
  • Brewster returns to Criminal Minds:
    The CBS crime drama CRIMINAL MINDS will be bringing back Padget Brewster for the series 200th episode, which will air later this season.
  • Nickelodeon, the radio station:
    Nickelodeon and Clear Channel will launch the Nick-branded radio station on iHeartRadio and Nick.com

TUESDAY:
  • Cable One drops Turner networks:
    Cable One has dropped all Turner cable networks in the latest carriage dispute. Cable one deliver video to 600,000 subscribers.
  • Dish agrees with Disney:
    Another carriage dispute was avoided when Dish and Disney agreed to a short-term extension. Disney networks include ABC and the ESPN Networks.
  • Summer drama series axed:
    NBC low rated summer drama CAMP was officially cancelled. 
WEDNESDAY:
  • Hulu adds Chormecast:
    The $35 HDMI dongle now has a Hulu app. The device will let users bypass the Hulu Plus services to play video from a smartphone/tablet to the TV via the Chromecast device. [LINK]
  • FOX picks up sitcom:
    A sitcom based on comedian John Mulaney, called MULANEY, got a series order from FOX. SNL producer Lorne Michaels is also attached to the series.
  • BROADCHURCH gets Tennant:
    FOX's remake of the BBC series BROADCHURCH had landed David Tennant of DR. WHO fame. The series is scheduled for a 2014-15 season debut.
  • MOTIVE gets a second season:
    ABC has picked has officiall renewed the Canadian produced drama MOTIVE for a summer 2014 run.
THURSDAY:
  • WILFRED switching networks: FX comedy WILFRED will be moving over to FXX for its final 10 episode season in 2014.
  • BREAKING BAD star gives a History lesson:
    Bryan Cranston  will be the narrator for the H2 series BIG HISTORY, premiering on November 2, 2013.
  • Amazon orders more comedy pilots:
    Amazon instant video has ordered the comedies MOZART IN THE JUNGLE ('Sex, Drugs and Classical Music'), THE OUTLAWS (Follows a pro football team), and TRANSPARENT (starring Jeffrey Tambor, Judith Light and Gaby Hoffman)
  • First renewal of the season:
    SLEEPY HOLLOW has been officially picked up for a second season by FOX
  • COVERT AFFAIRS will continue:
    USA drama COVERT AFFAIRS has been picked up for a 16 episode fifth season.
FRIDAY:
  • Talk show gets two more seasons:
    Syndicated talk show RACHEL RAY has been renewed through the 2015-16 TV season.
  • NBC going into space with Branson:
    NBC has picked up a reality series starring Sir Richard Branson about the space race. Mark Burnett is also involved in the project. [LINK]
  • NBC drama gets a full season order:
    The first new big hit of the TV season, THE BLACKLIST, was given a full season order of 22 episodes. 
  • FOX renews THE SIMPSONS:
    The animated classic will get a 26th season as FOX renews the series for the 2014-15 season.
  • LUCKY not so lucky:
    In a wise move, ABC officially cancels the new drama LUCKY 7 after just two episodes. The last episode failed to draw 3 million viewers or reach a 1.0 in the A18-49 ratings.
