Ratings: Broadcast Finals for October 3, 2013

The hot show of the night, after THE BIG BANG THEORY is ABC's SCANDAL. It picked up right where it left off last spring, becoming the #1 drama of the night and the #2 over all program of the evening. SCANDAL drew over 10.5 million viewers and a 3.6 rating in Adults 18-49. It easily out performed veteran drama GREY'S ANATOMY and dominated the 10 p.m. hour. The season premiere recorded series highs for SCANDAL.

THE CW had its first fall premiere night as its vampire dramas opened up, back-to-back. Veteran THE VAMPIRE DIARIES collected 2.6 million viewers and a 1.2 demo rating. The A18-49 rating was strong enough to top NBC during the 8 p.m. hour. However, TVD was down 19% in total viewers and off by 25% in the A18-49 ratings.

Following TVD on the CW was the freshman spin-off series THE ORIGINALS. Its premiere was relatively respectable. It only lost 14% of total viewers and 20% in the demo ratings. It two was down from last year, when BEAUTY & THE BEAST had its series premiere, but it was benefited by a stronger lead in audience.

Three new comedies were added on Thursday night, One from CBS (THE MILLERS and two from NBC (WELCOME TO THE FAMILY  and SEAN SAVES THE WORLD). The ratings for each of the three were at predictable levels.

Starting with the least viewed comedy, WELCOME TO THE FAMILY was the least watched program of the night, from the Big 4 networks and was beat by THE VAMPIRE DIARIES in the 8:30 slot, in the A18-49 ratings.

Following WTTF was three camera sitcom SEAN SAVES THE WORLD. Even though ratings were low, it did increase the NBC audience by nearly 50% from its lead in.

The top new comedy of the night was the series premiere of THE MILLERS on NBC.  It was the second most watched program of the night and #3 in the A18-49 ratings. However, losing 37% in the demographic ratings from its lead in is a bit concerning.
