TV Review: WE ARE MEN
The new CBS comedy WE ARE MEN is a another attempt at the single camera comedy. The cast is strong. Kal Penn, Jerry O'Connell and Tony Shalhoub, plus Chris Smith. That is the appeal of the series. Well know comedic actors in a new series.
The opening segment of the episode gives us a quick background of our four major characters. How each has lost at love, but trying to make it up by going after any woman that..., well, any woman. The Chris Smith character is the moral backbone of the group, looking for real love instead of a cheap thrill. The three, more experienced men are taking him under their wings to show him the ropes of bachelorhood.
The rest of the episode is the Chris Smith character realizing that he needed to move on and embrace his new friends, the Band of Brothers.
Most of the laughs in the episode were in the trailers, but there were still a few new chuckles. Each of the four characters seem likable. Tony Shalhoub can easily steal any scene he wants. His delivery is perfect. It is great to have him back in series television.
Jerry O'Connell, typecast, seems to be the sleaze of the group, but nothing near what we see on TWO AND A HALF MEN or 2BROKE GIRLS. And, for some reason, his character seems to want to take off his shirt at any chance he can.
Kal Penn is the former "new-be." His character is a little less defined than the others, but it should be flushed out in due time.
The WE ARE MEN pilot is not the funniest pilot I have ever scene, but there is a lot of potential for this series. It should fit well with HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, in the 8 p.m. hour. I give it a 7 out of 10.
