Ratings: Broadcast Finals for September 24, 2013
Night two of premiere week featured four series premieres, four returning series season premieres and two season finales. Lets look at the series premieres first.
AGENTS OF SHIELD is the real thing. It matched demo ratings with THE VOICE and drew over 12 million viewers at 8 p.m. This is a vast improvement over last year, which DANCING WITH THE STARS could only draw a 2.1 demo rating, from 8 to 10 p.m.
Following SHIELD was the new sitcom THE GOLDBERGS. Retention was a very respectable 74% in viewers, but just 66% in the A18-49 ratings. Last year, the HAPPY ENDINGS season premiere could only muster 5.6 million viewers and a 1.8 demo rating.
Another new sitcom, TROPHY WIFE, debuted at 9:30 p.m. Just 6.7 million viewers and a 2.3 demo rating for the single camera comedy. That is a lost of 2.25 million viewers from a 1/2 hour before and a lost of 28% in the demo ratings. I watched this new comedy and it will not last. Its not horrible, its just predictable.
And speaking of horrible. the new ABC drama LUCKY 7 arrived DOA at 10 p.m. Losing 2.2 million viewers and 43% in the A18-49 ratings will have this series gone before October 7th. This is considerably worse than the PRIVATE PRACTICE season premiere a year ago, which drew 6.5 million viewers and a 1.9 demo rating. If you have LUCKY 7 in your TV cancellation pool, you are about to collect on it.
CBS premieres all three of its veteran dramas. NCIS was down a 1/2 million viewers and 12% in the demo ratings, from last year's season premiere. NCIS: LA also down from last year, but with a slightly better retention rate out of NCIS. The surprise of the night was how poor PERSON OF INTEREST has done. It loses 24% of its viewers from NCIS: LA and just a 2.3 rating in Adults 18-49. VEGAS drew 14.9 million viewers and a 2.5 demo rating in the time slot, a year ago. CBS never acts quick, but it may be time to flip HOSTAGES and POI as soon as possible.
Over on NBC, CHICAGO FIRE posted its best ratings evert, thank to now having a great lead in program. However, compared to how the season premiere of GO ON did last year, out of the Tuesday edition of THE VOICE, Demo ratings are down 21% and viewership off by 800,000 viewers.
The FOX comedies had some huge week-to-week losses from the premieres. Quickly, DADS was off 2 million viewers and 41% in the demo. BROOKLYN NINE-NINE was down 2.2 million viewers and 31% in the demo ratings. NEW GIRL dropped about 1.5 million viewers and 38% in the A18-49 ratings. And last, and least, THE MINDY PROJECT fell 22% in viewers and demo ratings. Not a good sign for FOX, but I am sure there was some channel switching to sample the premieres on the other networks. NEW GIRL will not take long to overtake THE GOLDBERGS.
The CW closed out the runs of its two new summer series. WHOSE LINE IS IT ANYWAY? drew an all-time low, for a new episode, of just 1.3 million viewers and a 0.5 rating in Adults 18-49. This is what it should look like when the hit summer show goes up against the big boys of fall.
Following WHOSE LINE was the finale of CAPTURE, which also performed badly against tougher competition. Just under 700k in viewership and a 0.2 demo rating. Perhaps ending a week earlier would have been best for The CW.
