TOP 10: TV Theme Songs
The art of the TV theme song is almost gone. A large majority of Today's TV series have quick, 5-10 second title openings with very simple music. "In the good old days..." TV opening themes usually ran 30-60 seconds, with some as long as two full minutes.
Today we will look at what I consider the TOP 10 TV Theme Songs. These are original songs for the series, so no CSI's will be on list.
#10 - THE BIG BANG THEORY
One of the few current programs to have a good, traditional theme song that is also catchy. If you are a fan of the show, you already know the words to the song. A must for a great, classic TV theme.
#9 - HAWAII FIVE-O
A big sound with big horns, know by all since the 1960's. It is a song that most recognize within just a few notes. The longevity of the theme will be greatly extended with the 2010 remake of the series.
#8 - THE JEFFERSONS
"Movin' On Up" was sung and co-written by Ja'net DuBois of GOOD TIMES fame. A upbeat, theme that sings the premise of the Rags to Riches story of George Jefferson and his family.
#7 - CHEERS
The best part of this song is how it starts out quite and simple, then crescendos into the title of the song, "Where Everybody Knows Your Name!" A song about forgetting about the worries of life at a familiar place to be surrounded by friends. The theme was voted the best theme song of all time in a 2011 Rolling Stone readers poll.
#6 - BATMAN
The series has not been on network TV in over 40 years, but people still know how the song goes. "Na Na Na Na Na Na NA NA BATMAN!" Just last week, I saw in internet meme that featured that part of the song, depicted by a bunch of Grandmas, with an image of BATMAN at the end.
#5 - THE FLINTSTONES
A theme song that has lasted the test of time and is foundation of many other theme songs, like THE SIMPSONS. It is instantly recognizable and most people know the lyrics, even if its has been years/decades since they last watched an episode.
#4 - THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES
Another great classic sitcom that as lasted in syndication for decades. It has all the elemnets of a great theme song. Tells the back story with a very catchy tune.
#3 - THE ADDAMS FAMILY
I can name that tune in three notes. This theme is not only used in the classic TV series and two theatrical movies, but if you are ever at a baseball game, you are sure to here it played at least once.
#2 - THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW
Who can't whistle this theme song? The longevity of the series in syndication makes THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW theme a great classic.
#1 - GILLIGAN'S ISLAND
Perhaps the most memorable TV theme song of all time. A catchy jingle with lyrics that tell you exactly what happened to stand the seven castaways. But, which version do you like the one that does or does not include "The Professor and Marry Ann" at the ends of the song?
