Social TV Activity Chart for May 2, 2013

I have heard that when you look at the social networking, that it was a true representative of how successful or not a series is. The more twitter and Facebook posts a show has, the better in the ratings it does. However, this does not seem to be true.

Yes, AMERICAN IDOL is a popular show, despite its large erosion this season, but THE BIG BANG THEORY is a much more popular series now. Not only doe AI dominate in this chart each week, but so does THE VAMPIRE DIARIES and GLEE. They each get small fractions of the viewing audience that THEORY has.

My theory is shows with high social media rankings are programs viewers only "Kind-of" watch, while they surf the net and keep up with Facebook and twitter. Shows like THE BIG BANG THEORY are actually getting most of people's attention when they watch an episode.

  1. I would have to completely disagree with your analysis. I think that the Big Bang Theory not being as high on the social media spectrum shows that it has many more casual fans opposed to series like Vampire Diaries and Glee. These shows have much more passionate fans that want to talk about the show they are watching right then, where as with Big Bang Theory, viewers might be watching in the background and only catching parts of the show, and feel like it's something they can talk about tomorrow rather than right then.
