Ratings Review: UP ALL NIGHT!

Although UP ALL NIGHT has never been considered a hit comedy, it was one of the few NBC sitcoms that pulled in half-way decent ratings on its own, initially. Starting on Wednesdays at 8 p.m., UP ALL NIGHT was holding it own in the time slot. Because of this early success, NBC wanted to give it a prime spot behind its #1 comedy, THE OFFICE. However, that move actually proved to be near fatal and the first season ended early as NBC aired only original episodes for 13 of the 14 weeks in that slot.

Somehow, UP ALL NIGHT survived the first season. (I guess NBC had to air something.) and a second season was ordered. The series would get another good time slot, between 30 ROCK and THE OFFICE, on Thursday nights. The ratings  only got worse. 30 ROCK was not a show that is a good lead off and THE OFFICE is nowhere near the show it was just a couple seasons earlier. But, NBC still had faith in the series.

A decision was made to revamp the young comedy into a traditional, multi-cam sitcom after the first 11 episodes of the 2nd season. A total of five episodes would be produced under the new format and begin airing in the spring of 2013. But as the new year began, Christine Applegate and the show runner quit the series. The female lead was re-cast and the episode order was dropped to just one, effectively being a "pilot" episode. a couple weeks later, the remaining major cast members decided to not continue and began looking at other projects for the 2013-14 season.

In all, UP ALL NIGHT produced a total of 35 episodes. Usually this meens that the series will never be seen again, but in the world of Netflix and Amazon Prime, those few fans of the series can continue to watch reruns at anytime, any day.
