A Look Back at MR. PRESIDENT - 1987-88
On January 14, 2013, actor Conrad Bain passed away at the age of 89. He first came on the prime time scene as the neighbor on the sitcom MAUDE (1972-78). Without missing a beat, Bain took on the role as Phillip Drummond on the sitcom, DIFF'RENT STROKES (78-86). But few people remember the series he was on immediately after DIFF'RENT STROKES, starring George c Scott, and was a first season FOX sitcom, MR. PRESIDENT.
Mr. President premiered on May 3, 1987. It was part of the Fox Broadcasting Company's premiere season of prime time entertainment, alongside MARRIED... WITH CHILDREN, THE TRACEY ULLMAN SHOW, and DUET.
The series launched on Sunday nights at 9:00 p.m. In September of 87, it was moved to a half hour later, at 9:30 p.m. After just one month, MR. PRESIDENT was moved again to kick off Saturday nights, at 8:00 p.m. In a last ditch effort, FOX move the series yet again, this time to close out Saturday nights at 9:30 p.m.
The 24th and last original episode aired on February 13, 1988. The series continued in repeats until its final airing on April 2, 1988.
About MR. PRESIDENT:
The series centered around newly elected President Samuel Arthur Tresch, the former governor of Wisconsin. Meg Tresch, the First Lady, couldn't handle life in the white house, so she left him at the start of the second season. To fill the role of First Lady was Meg's sister, Lois. Lois had a thing for the President and thought this was her chance. The president had two children, 16-year-old Cynthia and 12-year-old Nick. Charlie Ross, a loyal, long time associate of the Tresch, was the President's Chief of Staff.
