CBS has best fall lineup

Sometimes it pays to be the tortoise, not the hare, and come fall the longtime tortoise of broadcast TV, CBS, is the one media buyers think has the most promising lineup of new and returning shows.

This is indeed a switch.

In similar surveys over recent years, it's typically ABC that's voted the network with the most promising fall schedule.

This year, in a Media Life poll that ran last week, CBS edged out ABC by a comfortable margin.

Asked which network has the strongest schedule for 2009-'10, 49 percent of readers chose CBS, versus 38 percent for ABC.

All the other networks, including season winner Fox, ranked in the single-digit percentages: Fox at 6 percent, NBC at 5 percent, and the CW at 2 percent.

But when the question was reversed--which network has the weakest schedule for 2009-'10?--NBC came out way ahead, at 63 percent, beating out the CW at 25 percent. Fox came in a 6 percent, ABC and 4 percent and CBS at just 1 percent.

Yet once again, media buyers believe Fox will win the coming season in adults 18-49, the demographic advertisers most care about, as it has for the past half-dozen years, driven by "American Idol," even as CBS held the lead in total audience.

Asked who will win next season, 55 percent chose Fox. CBS came in second at 23 percent, ahead of ABC at 18 percent. NBC came in a 4 percent.

Overall, media buyers credit CBS with the best programming strategy.

  1. Interesting that the article states that ABC has usually won the poll the past few years despite maybe having the most failures during that time.
